Have you ever tried to appraise your neighbors? Are they good or bad? How did you appraise them? It seems to be groundless if you evaluate them without certain norms to base on. In my opinion, a good neighbor ought to possess two necessary characteristics as follows.

First and foremost, a good neighbor should be respectful of the people living around him. His respect for others is shown through his taking neighbors into account in his daily behaviors. The fact is that neighbors surely live close to each other and share the same space. So it is easy that one do things that have harmful effects on his neighbors. A neighbor who respects others will try to avoid them. For example, when a quarrel happens in a family, they may shout at each other, say bad words and have unseemly conduct or even fight with each other. If a good neighbor will be aware that those actions will bother people around so he will try to control his temper and find solutions to deal with the argument. More notably, the respect is also expressed by listening to neighbors’ ideas or complaints. As they gather into a cluster, sometimes they have to contribute ideas to make a common decision. A good neighbor will listen to them and try to make his neighbors satisfied with the decision.

Second, a good neighbor should be helpful to others. It cannot be denied that a good neighbor will be certainly willing to assist others in material life. People frequently have difficulties in their life or at least some businesses that they have to do. At that time, a good neighbor will be enthusiastic to combine efforts with theirs so that their business can be dealt with more quickly and easily. Besides, he may help by lending them money or something they need to help them overcome their obstacles. Apart from it, a helpful neighbor also helps others in spiritual life. Accordingly, he not only takes care of others and tries to make them feel happy with his jokes and heartfelt affection to them but also encourages them in everything else. By that way, he helps them live a significant life and have more motivation to face challenges in this life.

To sum up, a neighbor who is both respectful and helpful to people living around him is definitely a good one. Basing on these two standards is a good way to both evaluate a neighbor and know how to become a good neighbor ourselves.
